Current TV Exploitative?

There has been some talk and contention amongst film makers about the aggresive rights policy adopted by Current TV. Current TV pursue to have all distribution rights to any material submitted to them. Current TV have branded themselves as the democratisation of media. However this story by Isaac Brown paints a different picture. One of Isaac Brown’s short films about consumerism was screeened by a film festival followed by a request by the festival to distribute it on DVD. However as the film was originally submitted to Current TV, Isaac Brown aware of who owns the rights asked them for permission. ‘Decision makers at Current have decided not to allow the Media That Matters Film Festival to include “The Art of Consumption” on their festival’s DVD. Despite the fact that Current has no intention of ever distributing DVDs, they maintain exclusive ownership of ALL the rights to the piece.’ He further writes ‘I am struck by the irony that this pod about American consumerism is not reaching its full potential because of corporate greed, and this is coming from a media company that prides itself on how progressive it is.’ You can read the full letter of protest on Isaac’s website.
